Gardens and Greenshouses

Found myself back in the 16th arrondissement this morning, once again on the edge of the verdant Bois de Boulogne, this time exploring the fabulous Jardins des Serres D’Auteuil.

The botanical gardens date back to Louis XV, but the numerous greenhouses were designed and built by Jean-Camille Formigé in the late 1800’s.

I loved the glass ‘scales’ that cover the curved surfaces and the low-tech wooden blinds which are lowered over the panes to control the light.

Best of all, it felt like a secret oasis on this mid-week visit with only a few other people enjoying the gardens, while the Peripherique-bound traffic zoomed past outside the gates.
